   MEET MARY BETH

Graduation with Mary Beth Thompson

My journey in education began early, inspired by my mother, who was my 8th-grade Civics teacher, and continues now that I am a mother too. I graduated Summa Cum Laude with my Bachelor of Arts in Theater Arts and History from Loyola University New Orleans in 2007.  In 2011, I earned my Master of Arts in Teaching from the University of Southern California, Rossier School of Education and currently hold my Single Subject Teaching Credential from California in Social Sciences and Drama. My professional journey in education spans over a decade, with roles in both public and private schools.

I am currently the Executive Director of Summit Preparatory Charter High School in Redwood City, CA and worked at St. Matthew Catholic School in San Mateo when I first moved to the Bay area. I have dedicated my career to education and am passionate about ensuring that all students, regardless of their background, have the opportunity to succeed. I am committed to fostering an educational environment where every student can thrive.

I am running for the School Board because I believe that our students deserve an environment where they can thrive. While divergent opinions can strengthen our community, our students cannot afford for these differences to divide and stall their education. As both an educator and a parent, I bring a valuable perspective to the board. I understand the challenges and opportunities within our schools from multiple angles, which positions me to advocate for policies that benefit our diverse population.

Throughout my career, I have been driven by one guiding question: Is this best for students? This motivates me to ensure that our students feel a sense of belonging and are held to high expectations. If elected, I promise to dedicate my time to fulfilling the requirements of this position and listening to all stakeholders: students, teachers, parents, the district, and the community.

Back to School Night with Mary Beth Thompson

San Carlos has been my home together with my husband and our 3-year-old son since 2014. Our family absolutely loves the community, whether we're strolling down Laurel Street or walking around the neighborhood with our rescue dog, Dino.

Being part of this community has deepened my commitment to ensuring that our schools are the best they can be for all our children.

Together, we can create a brighter future for our students and our community.

Please support me in my endeavor to make our community the best it can be for our children and families. Students deserve a candidate who understands the issues in education because every child has their own story and dreams. I’m excited to work collaboratively with the governance team and use my expertise and passion to serve all students in the district.
